U16s ease into cup semi finals

Paul Rushton

Braces from Owen Ebbs, Ethan Hall and Remy Deegan help Newport Under-16s to an emphatic victory over Vics at WightFibre Park.

Newport Under-16s swept aside Vics at WightFibre Park this morning, producing a composed and accomplished performance to run out 7–0 winners and secure their place in the next round.

It took just five minutes for Newport to open the scoring. Eron Farr-Bishop played Owen Ebbs through on goal, and he calmly lifted the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.

Two quick goals from Ethan Hall then put Newport firmly in control, and they never looked likely to surrender their advantage. Remy Deegan added a fourth just before half-time, arriving at the far post to tap home.

Vics offered more of a threat after the break, with Jye Lock having to stay alert to preserve Newport’s clean sheet. At the other end, the visiting goalkeeper also impressed, producing an excellent save to deny Logan Hobbs.

Newport’s fifth came through some quick thinking at a corner. Ebbs played the ball short to Josh Graham, who found Ben McCormack to steer home.

McCormack thought he had added another with a superb finish, only to be denied by the offside flag. He did not have to wait long for his second, however, bundling the ball over the line following a scramble in the penalty area.

Deegan completed the scoring with his second of the morning, following up after Hall had struck the post to put the finishing touch on an excellent team display.

There was also a welcome return for Toby Brownrigg-Jones, who settled straight back into the side. With all three substitutes playing their part, it was a strong all-round performance from Newport as they progressed in convincing style.
