Newport come from behind to beat Colden Common and book a return trip to Pagham in the next round of the FA Vase.

Newport came from behind to secure their place in the next round, with a return trip to Pagham now waiting in September.

On another roasting afternoon, with temperatures touching 30 degrees and a very brown-looking pitch, the playing surface was actually much better than might have been feared.

The early exchanges were tight, with neither side creating too much, although Leon Pitman was certainly the busier of the two keepers. Just before the first hydration break, Colden Common took the lead. Jack Nicholas found space on the left-hand side of the box and finished across Pitman to put the visitors ahead.

Newport needed a response. Ji Nash saw an effort well saved before, right on the stroke of half-time, Newport produced their best move of the opening 45 minutes. Jordan Browne finished it superbly, placing a precise shot into the corner to send the sides in level.

Last season's games between the two sides were both decided by a single goal and this one looked like it might follow the same pattern.

Newport started to get on the front foot after the break. Keelan Walsh and Jacob Reynolds began to take control in midfield and the front line became much more of a threat.

At the other end, Jez Conway and George Holbrook were excellent at the heart of the Newport defence, dealing with Colden Common's counter-attacks. The visitors were sitting deeper by now and their biggest threat came from set pieces.

Their best chance came late on when a free header at the far post flashed just wide, while two more important blocks from Leon Pitman kept the Stallions out.

With a penalty shoot-out beginning to look a real possibility, Newport found the decisive goal in the 73rd minute.

Once again Jacob Reynolds was at the heart of it. His clever through ball released Jordan Browne on the left, who cut inside before burying his shot into the far corner for his second of the afternoon.

In such demanding conditions both benches were needed, and it was great to see Newport's young substitutes help see the game out in a calm and controlled way. Kudzhi Mazambara fired a fierce effort just over, while Jacob Reynolds almost caught the keeper off his line from distance late on.

There was no way back for Colden Common, although on this evidence they will once again be a force in the league this season.

For Newport, attention now turns to a trip east to Pagham in September in the next round. And, just as they were today, the team will no doubt be very well supported on the road.
