Nash at the Double as Port Earn a Point at Whitchurch

Paul Rushton

Newport travelled north to Whitchurch and came away with a hard-earned point from an entertaining game that never looked likely to finish goalless.

A young DJ provided the pre-match soundtrack and helped create a lively atmosphere. Playing down the notorious slope in the first half, Port made a bright start. Ji Nash struck the post inside three minutes, but made no mistake a few minutes later, finishing from six yards to give Newport an early lead.

Whitchurch dominated much of the remainder of the half. Their physical high press and an exceptionally long throw kept Newport defending for long spells, and it was no surprise when the hosts equalised from a set piece. Newport failed to clear a corner, allowing a neat side-footed finish from close range.

The home side repeatedly created overlaps out wide, particularly on their right, but a combination of wayward finishing and excellent goalkeeping from Leon Pitman kept the scores level. Two saves stood out, with the best a low stop to his right that even drew applause from the Whitchurch bench.

In a game where both teams played better uphill, Newport improved considerably after the break. A half-time switch to five at the back gave Newport greater stability, while more possession brought the wide threat of Connor Kelly and Ji Nash into the game.

Despite that improvement, Newport gifted Whitchurch the lead. A mix-up between Joe Hancott and Leon Pitman allowed the ball to roll into an unguarded net.

The setback sparked Port’s best spell of the match. They created several good chances before Ji Nash struck again, firing home from the centre of the box to bring Newport level.

Both sides pushed for a winner, while the referee began reaching for his cards. Ollie Linington and Jordan Browne picked up bookings after earlier challenges had gone unpunished.

Following another lengthy period of added time, the final whistle confirmed a share of the points. On balance, a draw was a fair result and extended Newport’s unbeaten away record.

Next up is the visit of Kintbury to WightFibre Park, where Newport will look to continue their recent good home form.

As always, a huge thank you to the travelling supporters, who once again came from far and wide to get behind the team.
