The home side attacked from the start and took the lead after ten minutes. A Ji Nash free-kick came back off the post and Jordan Browne was first to the loose ball, forcing it home to become the first Newport player to score a competitive goal at WightFibre Park.

The celebrations had barely finished when Browne struck again. Kai Grace delivered the ball into the area and the Newport striker met it with a powerful header to double the lead.

Amesbury were struggling to contain Newport, who continued to move the ball quickly and create chances. The third goal arrived in the 25th minute and it was a particularly special one. Ji Nash created the opportunity and Connor Kelly finished from close range.

Sadly, Conor was forced off with an injury just four minutes later, and Kade Woodford replaced him.

Newport continued to dominate and added another on the half-hour. Joe Butcher released Nash, who finished across the goalkeeper for his first of the afternoon.

Butcher then made it five before the break. Grace provided his second assist of the game and the player-manager finished with a superb curling strike from outside the penalty area.

With the result all but secured, Newport made two further changes after 59 minutes. Harri Catania and Michael Thompsett replaced Jacob Reynolds and George Holbrook.

In the same minute, Woodford added Newport’s sixth. Nash turned provider once again and Woodford drove a low finish beyond the goalkeeper to score his first goal for the club.

Nash claimed his second seven minutes later. Butcher picked him out and Ji calmly found the net to make it 7-0.

Jack Egerton-Read and Keelan Walsh were introduced for the closing stages and there was still time for one more piece of history. Newport were awarded a penalty in the 70th minute after Keelan Walsh was fouled inside the box and Ji made no mistake from the spot, completing the first competitive hat-trick scored at WightFibre Park.

Amesbury hit the bar with four minutes to go but other than that, and a few long range shots, Newport keeper Leon Pitman’s had a relatively quiet afternoon.

The final whistle confirmed a memorable victory and an afternoon full of moments that will now form part of the history of Newport’s new home.
