1. Club History

The modern Newport IOW Football Club presents a very different picture from that conjured up by its origins on 27th January 1888.

The actual date of formation can be confirmed from the original minute book, which is still in the club's possession. At that time, over 130 years ago, Newport played on a piece of land known as Well’s Field, which later became known as Church Litten. In those early days, players would walk from the local public house - where they changed - across to the field, where they had to clear the cows before play could commence.

Newport became founder members of the Isle of Wight League in 1898 and were League Champions on four occasions.

The club joined the Hampshire League in 1927, taking over the fixtures of the defunct Gosport Albion club mid-season. Within three seasons, Newport had won the league for the first time. The 1930’s saw further league titles and a Hampshire Senior Cup victory in 1932. The 1935/36 season saw Newport reach the second round of the FA Cup for the first time, eventually bowing out to Southall.

In the 1960s, the club claimed further Hampshire Senior Cup wins in 1961 and 1966. The 1970s brought a hat-trick of Hampshire League titles - in 1979, 1980, and 1981 - as well as two more Senior Cup successes in 1980 and 1981.

Newport became founder members of the Wessex League in 1986, finishing a creditable fourth in their debut season and in 1989/90, Newport were promoted to the Southern League. The 2000/01 season saw the club win the Dr Martens League Eastern Division Championship, following an epic 1–0 win on the final day of the season against Chelmsford and earning promotion to the Premier Division.

Sadly the topflight proved too great a challenge, and the club returned to the Eastern Division after just one season.

Soon after, during the 2003/04 season, the club entered administration. The fight to keep the club alive was taken up by the supporters, with the Save Newport (FC) Action Group successfully rescuing the club. The 2004/05 season marked Newport’s debut in the Isthmian League.

The 2006/07 season saw a return to the more familiar Southern League, playing in the South and West Division. On 1st August 2007, The Port played a friendly against a full-strength Portsmouth side, attracting a record crowd of 3,112 to St George’s Park - the highest ever attendance at the ground. The club was relegated back to the Wessex League at the end of the 2007/8 season after finishing bottom of Division One South and West of the Southern League. Newport then remained in the Wessex League Premier Division and won the Russell Cotes Cup in the 2010/11 season.

Following several top end finished in the Wessex League Premier Division and a run to the last 16 of the FA Vase, Newport were relegated to Division One at the end of the 2017/18 season.

The club left St George’s Park at the end of the 2018/19 season and ground-shared with both East Cowes Vics, Ryde Saints and Cowes Sports.

Newport finished 3rd in Division One in 2021/22 and were narrowly beaten in the play-off final and lost in the semi-finals the following season.

Since being appointed our player manager Joe Butcher has assembled a dynamic squad featuring a blend of youth and experience.

Newport hope to move into their new ground on The Racecourse, just outside Newport in time for the 2026/27 season.
